Fiction - Monday 27th September

Glorious London new wave from a band that weave genres sublimely, flicking from instrument to instrument in order to create romantic, “geek guitar bliss” (DAZED & CONFUSED) with a “tropically tinged” (NME) effervescent cool. Support comes from ex-Shitdisco members Age Of Consent.  The kind of band that come at you with catchy, dark-edged pop made up of hypnotic loops and stomping beats. Sounding a little like a thunder storm on a hot night, intense melodies and sharp synths lighten their sombre tones…

Field Day 2010

Field Day 2010

This years Field Day left the rain as a distant memory as the sun held out for a glorious event with a magnificent line-up.  Electronic mayhem saw Mount Kimbie fill out the Bloggers Delight tent with a rush of experimental dubstep and head boppers.  Gilles Peterson introduced Chicago hip hop/jazz collective the Hypnotic Brass Ensemble, tailor made for sunset with chilled vibes reaching across the park .  Caribou were uplifting, positive and ballsy and unsurprisingly drew a considerable crowd, all eager to catch the psychedelic pop-electronica.  The highly anticipated Gold Panda proved a popular draw and Matthew Herbert entertained the crowd, mixing discordant sounds whilst mounting a silver step ladder and finishing his set inside a tent.  The juddering techno of Moderat echoed an awe-inspiring headline set that leaves Field Day 2010 as a memorable one.  Its just finding that there is not enough time to fit it all in, especially having to wait for so long for a beer.  Field Day is an evolution of improvement as we pursue the best new music, sound and visual entertainment and this years proved that all the hard work does pay off.

21 August -  Django Django

Unquiet Desperation presents Summer Sounds…

Django Django

This four-piece met at art school in Edinburgh and now live in fashionable east London.  The emphasis is on cadence, although they’re not heavy on the electronics.  It’s quite tricky to explain quite what it is that Django Django do, which is good, because it suggests they’re doing something a little bit different.  The subtle, skittish electronics lay over energetic beats which plain and simply make you want to dance.  The wild-west guitar work keeps a low profile and their tribal image and the odd Arabian melody holds them somewhere between the worlds of folk and dance.  Yeasayer and hot chip come to mind.  Catch their dj set on the 21st of August.

SOUTH YORKS - Off-Tramlines Party

DJ’s - Winston Hazel, Oris Jay, Chris Duckenfield, Pipes, Benjamin Hatton and Kid Acne.

Kid Acne made music working alongside British graffiti stalwart Req One and his ever trusty “drum computer”, recording nocturnal stream-of-conscious lyrics about such topics as “rocking to Breaker’s Revenge at Stonehenge” and being “the illegal mic dragster”. After releasing a string of council-house hip-hop Lp’s and 12"s on his own Invisible Spies imprint, he landed himself a deal with Lex / EMI, joined forces with Sheffield heavyweight producer Ross Orton and released Romance Ain’t Dead to wide critical acclaim. Acne has since created exclusive sessions for Radio 1’s Breezeblock, DJed at Big Chill and Bestival as part of Rizla’s Invisible Players and performed live at Sonar and Pantiero Festival in Cannes.

Sonar 2010

This years Sonar Festival in Barcelona took place across two indoor and two outdoor stages with over three days of events focused around “advanced music and multimedia art”.  Art, audiovisual concerts, and medialab presentations next to DJ sets, electonic music, film and more.  This years bill ranged from glitches, glides and ethereal vocals from London based Nedry, to experimental organic electronica that is Caribou, to bigger named acts such as The Chemical Brothers and Dizzee Rascal.  As part of the mayhem there were a range of Interactive multimedia installations: Marcel-lí Antúnez created a video wall of cartoonish craziness that placed viewers’ faces in the action.  ReacTable, by the Musical Technology Group from Pompeu Fabra University in Barcelona, was a video-terminal table that responded to users moving around blocks and discs, showing connections like a flow chart as it triggered clicks and clatters.  And Golan Levin and Zachary Lieberman displayed a piece called Messa di Voce that made bubbles and drew lines using a microphone and tracking system.  Lets hope i can actually make it along next year.

SEXBEAT / Branchage viral series part.2 Tweak Bird

SEXBEAT / Branchage viral series part.2 Tweak Bird

Installment no.2 of the SEXBEAT viral series with Branchage film festival is a collaboration between Tweak Bird and directors Fred Grace & Gemma Atkinson. Tweak Bird make a whole bunch of noise for a 2 piece band of brothers (siblings that is, not over blown US drama). Their set at the SEXBEAT – Stag & Dagger stage felt more like a guest pass to their practice room than a festival performance, as they engrossed the crowd in a 30 minute, riff heavy jam, sounding much more Kyuss than No Age. Stopmakingme - OWTIC 001

Stopmakingme - OWTIC 001

Here’s a regular little feature I’ll be contributing to the ace Out With The In Crowd website. A mix of brand new music making my life better right now. It’s more a collection of records rather than a DJ mix but the idea is that it should be listened to in this order. A mixtape, if you will. It’s always a really enjoyable exercise to do such projects. It gives me the opportunity to bring out some different tracks I wouldn’t normally play in clubs. Put it on your iPod and have a listen whilst walking around in the cold. Hope y’all like it!
